Ten years ago, the MV World Odyssey was docked in San Diego. It would be my home for the next 100+ days for the Semester at Sea Spring 2016 voyage as it circumnavigated the globe from Mexico to England.

Dawn pink clouds over the Atlantic Ocean viewed from the deck of the MV Explorer as we traveled from England to Portugal. I was out most mornings and evenings to watch the sun rise and set while on the Semester at Sea voyages. Semester at Sea no longer does the Enrichment Voyages or the Summer Semester Voyages.

Noctilucent Clouds viewed from my cabin on the MV Explorer while traveling from Stockholm to Copenhagen while crossing the Baltic Sea. Noctilucent clouds are high-altitude clouds that appear as glowing blue or silver streaks in the night sky, typically visible during summer months at high latitudes (or winter months in the southern hemisphere). They are tiny ice crystals illuminated by the sun below the horizon and only visible from the ground during astronomical twilight.

More images of Noctilucent Clouds are available in my PhotoShelter Gallery.

Sailboat passing in front of the setting sun viewed from the deck of the MV Explorer on the Baltic Sea. For several voyages we have been having a contest to capture images of ships passing in front of the rising or setting sun while at sea.

While visiting the Lerwick lighthouse there were many Atlantic Puffins nesting along the cliffs. This Puffin was resting behind some pink flowers.

Fifteen-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2010 Enrichment Voyage. Day 9 on the MV Explorer, Caribbean Sea.
The shadows of three photographers waiting for the sun to set on the deck of the MV Explorer. We were on the voyage as part of Michael Mariant’s “Ultimate Travel Photography” workshop. Every night we watched the sun set hoping to see and record the “Green Flash” as the sun goes below the horizon. Note the size of the telephoto lenses — mine was the small one in the middle.

I was surprised to see handguns, knives and other weapons at a shop in the St. Petersburg to Moscow train station. This was after we had gone through a security check and passing through metal detectors before boarding the night train to Moscow.

While the MV Explorer was docked in St. Georges, Granada our assignment for Michael Mariant’s Ultimate Travel Photography workshop was to photograph the people and activities in the town. It turned out to be exam day at the St. Georges Anglican Senior School. The headmaster let me step in and take some images of the students busy taking the exam.

While on a walkabout in Riga, we came across a Gold Street Artist following a group of women with ballons. He got one of the women to sit on his lap to have her picture taken. The Nikon 1 series of cameras were small and unobtrusive for street photography.

After flying to Sweden on Icelandic Air I took the Express Train from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm. This was after an overnight flight, changing planes in Reykjavik. I was tired and just followed the signs.
