• Noctilucent Clouds (10-June-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea, Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage. Baltic Sea.

Noctilucent Clouds viewed from my cabin on the MV Explorer while traveling from Stockholm to Copenhagen while crossing the Baltic Sea. Noctilucent clouds are high-altitude clouds that appear as glowing blue or silver streaks in the night sky, typically visible during summer months at high latitudes (or winter months in the southern hemisphere). They are tiny ice crystals illuminated by the sun below the horizon and only visible from the ground during astronomical twilight.

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea, Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage.

Sailboat passing in front of the setting sun viewed from the deck of the MV Explorer on the Baltic Sea. For several voyages we have been having a contest to capture images of ships passing in front of the rising or setting sun while at sea.

  • Handguns and Knives (03-June-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring Enrichment Voyage. Day 38 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

I was surprised to see handguns, knives and other weapons at a shop in the St. Petersburg to Moscow train station. This was after we had gone through a security check and passing through metal detectors before boarding the night train to Moscow.

  • Gold Street Performer (01-June-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage. Day 36 in Riga, Latvia.

While on a walkabout in Riga, we came across a Gold Street Artist following a group of women with ballons. He got one of the women to sit on his lap to have her picture taken. The Nikon 1 series of cameras were small and unobtrusive for street photography.

  • HM Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter (26-May-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage, North Sea.

HM Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter (Stac Pollaidh, G-BIMU) hovered near the MV Explorer as we traveled across the North Sea from Dover to Oslo. It may have been a training exercise as no one from the Enrichment Voyage needed to be transported for medical treatment. I am not sure where the helicopter was based, but the Stac Pollaidh name is a mountain in the northwest Scottish Highlands.

  • Snail on the Trail (25-May-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea, Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage Field Trip in Dover.

This yellow “Snail on the Trail” was observed while on a hike to the base of the Cliffs of Dover from the National Trust South Foreland Lighthouse in St. Margaret’s Bay. The field trip took us to see the sights in and around Dover. The snail reminded me of a bright yellow Banana Slug I saw in Big Sur, California several years earlier.

  • Mother Admiring Monsieur Jacques Sculpture (17-May-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage. Day 22 of 52.

While the MV Explorer was docked in Amsterdam, we went on a Semester at Sea field trip to the Kröller-Müller Museum and Sculpture Garden at Hoge Veluwe National Park in Otterlo, Netherlands. While walking through the outdoor Sculpture Garden, Mother posed with the ´Monsieur Jacques´ (1956) sculpture by Oswald Wenckebach. I processed the image in black and white to avoid some distracting colors in the background. These days I could have just used AI to remove the distractions.

  • Street Art in Cozumel (16-May-2011)

Fourteen-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2011 Enrichment Voyage.

Mother sitting at a bench in front of a street art mural in Cozumel, Mexico. While the MV Explorer was docked in Cozumel, we attended a field program that included Josefina’s Mexican cooking class. On the way back to the ship, we passed this mural where the blue colors matched her clothes.

  • Berber Farmer Reaping Wheat in Morocco (06-May-2013)

Twelve-Years Ago Today. Semester at Sea Spring 2013 Enrichment Voyage.

While the MV Explorer was docked in Casablanca, I took the field trip to the Atlas Mountains. I captured this image of a Berber farmer holding a sickle in his hand and wave to us as we approached the village where we were going to stop for a cooking lesson and lunch. I didn’t know that anyone harvested wheat this way anymore.
